COIMBATORE ANNAPOORNA HOTEL STYLE SAMBAR

INGREDIENTS
  • Toor dal - 1/2 cup
  • Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Mustard - 1 tsp
  • Onion(large) - 1
  • Tomato(medium) - 3
  • Asafoetida a pinch
  • Turmeric a pinch
  • Sambar powder - 1 tbsp
  • Chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Salt as needed
FOR GRINDING:
  • Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Fenugreek - 1 tsp
  • Coriander - 1 tbsp
  • Cumin - 2 tsp
  • Black Peppercorns - 1 tbsp
  • Channa dal - 1 tbsp
  • Grated coconut - 2 tbsp

METHOD
  1. Cook dal with 1 cup of water and keep aside.
  2. Now, heat oil in a pan add all the ingredients under for grinding, cool them, grind and leave aside.
  3. Heat oil in a pan add mustard.
  4. When it splutters add asafoetida, chopped onions, saute till transparent.
  5. Now, add finely chopped tomatoes, cover and cook till it becomes mushy adding turmeric and salt.
  6. Now add cooked dal.
  7. Add sambar powder and chilli powder.
  8. Add grounded masala.
  9. Add 2 cups of water, boil for 3 mins and simmer for 5 mins.
  10. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with idly or dosa.

Note:
  • Add vegetables if you want to.
  • Add more water if you want it to be thin and watery.
