COIMBATORE ANNAPOORNA HOTEL STYLE SAMBAR
INGREDIENTS
- Toor dal - 1/2 cup
- Oil - 1 tbsp
- Mustard - 1 tsp
- Onion(large) - 1
- Tomato(medium) - 3
- Asafoetida a pinch
- Turmeric a pinch
- Sambar powder - 1 tbsp
- Chilli powder - 1 tsp
- Salt as needed
FOR GRINDING:
- Oil - 1 tbsp
- Fenugreek - 1 tsp
- Coriander - 1 tbsp
- Cumin - 2 tsp
- Black Peppercorns - 1 tbsp
- Channa dal - 1 tbsp
- Grated coconut - 2 tbsp
METHOD
- Cook dal with 1 cup of water and keep aside.
- Now, heat oil in a pan add all the ingredients under for grinding, cool them, grind and leave aside.
- Heat oil in a pan add mustard.
- When it splutters add asafoetida, chopped onions, saute till transparent.
- Now, add finely chopped tomatoes, cover and cook till it becomes mushy adding turmeric and salt.
- Now add cooked dal.
- Add sambar powder and chilli powder.
- Add grounded masala.
- Add 2 cups of water, boil for 3 mins and simmer for 5 mins.
- Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with idly or dosa.
- Add vegetables if you want to.
- Add more water if you want it to be thin and watery.
